The approach to the coronavirus has entered a new phase. On behalf of the regional mayors mayor Halsema of Amsterdam wrote a letter as chair of the Security Region Amsterdam-Amstelland about the measures to battle the corona virus which came in effect on March 12 . Diemen is part of this Security Region.
Letter from Mayor Halsema, chair of the Security Regio Amsterdam-Amstelland, 12 March 2020.
Dear people of Diemen,
The approach to the coronavirus has entered a new phase. In the Netherlands, including the Amsterdam-Amstelland region, new measures against the spread of the coronavirus will apply as of today. The Dutch government announced these measures this afternoon.
Unfortunately, this will have implications for our community. The measures will have an impact on public life, on our work and on our situation at home. Working from home should be the norm if possible. Events are cancelled and large public institutions must unfortunately close their doors. Many businesses and organisers are facing a difficult time ahead.
Everyone will have to pay extra attention to our elderly and vulnerable residents.
This situation is likely to cause you concern and uncertainty. I urge you to follow the new measures to give the coronavirus as little chance as possible of spreading.
The following measures are in effect until 31 March:
For everyone in the Netherlands: stay at home if you have a cold, cough, sore throat and/or fever. Avoid social contact. Only call the doctor if the symptoms get worse.
Gatherings of more than 100 people are cancelled throughout the Netherlands. This also applies to public places such as museums, concert halls, theatres, sports clubs and sports competitions.
People throughout the Netherlands are urged to work from home as much as possible or to spread out their working hours.
Vulnerable people (the elderly and people with low immunity) are advised to avoid large groups and public transport. In general, people are strongly advised to limit visits to vulnerable people.
For healthcare professionals and personnel with critical functions (such as the police, emergency services or utility companies): a lot is asked of you. Only stay at home if you have symptoms and a fever. If necessary, consult with your employer. And also: do not travel abroad.
Colleges and universities are asked to provide education online instead of giving large-scale lectures.
Primary and secondary schools, and childcare will remain open: there are fewer infections and the environment is less international. Children and young people are not the group with the highest risks. In addition, the social impact of closing schools would be significant and would contribute little to limiting the spread of the coronavirus. Children with a cold should stay at home.
I ask for your understanding that municipal services are also under pressure due to illness and preventative measures. Needless to say, we will give priority to the services our residents depend on the most.
I wish a speedy recovery for all those affected by the coronavirus. We will keep you up to date with any new developments.
Mayor Femke Halsema
